Roman style hobnails
7mm - $21.00/lb
9mm - $23.00/lb
Based on originals remaining on artifact
Caligae soles these hobnails are made from steel rod, partly
machined, but after annealing, they’re hand forged to finish
them and they look great- just like the real things.
We will have two sizes available because there are often multiple
sizes of nails on a sole: 7mm diameter with a 5mm cone height,
and a slightly larger size that’s 9mmx7mm. The shanks are all
14mm in length so they can go all the way through even a 1cm
thick sole and still have plenty to bend over to keep them
secure. Because they’re machined/forged from steel wire, they’re
strong- the manufacturer attempted to break a shank by hammering
and failed- all they managed to do was nearly completely curl it
around.
The price for our first run of these was $21CAD/lb (454g) for the 7mm size, and $23CAD/lb
(454g) for the 9mm size, and there are about 200 nails/lb for the
7x5, and a little less for the 9x7s- enough for an average pair
of Caligae if you choose one of the approximately 100 nails/sole
patterns. We expect the price to stay the same, but contact us
for a price quote before making your order.
Be aware, Keltica needs a minimum order because these are a
custom run, so we are looking for a combined order for 100 lbs
weight. It will be later in 2008 before we can offer another
run.
This is necessary to get the nails made at the price we have, so
nails by the pound will only be available once our minimum
100lbs weight is met again.
Beyond a second production run, it’s uncertain just when another batch will be
made- so get them now while they’re available!
We’ll need all orders and payments in by the end of September
2008 and the production order will go in at the beginning of October
2008. (Or until we have sufficient orders)
